About Patrick Landeza
Patrick Kahakauwila Kamaholelani Landeza was born and raised in Berkeley, California, to Hawaii-born parents. Surrounded by music his entire life, he learned guitar as a teenager by observing his Uncles at backyard family gatherings. Later, he went on to study with Slack Key royalty, including Raymond Kane, Cyril Pahinui, George Kuo, and Dennis Kamakahi. A veteran musician, composer, and producer, Landeza earned a Nā Hōkū Hanohano award (the first musician from the mainland) for his 2013 “Slack Key Huaka’i,” which won for Best Slack Key Album of the Year. In 2019, Landeza won the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Ki Ho’alu Foundation Legacy Award, an honor that represents Hawaiian Slack Key music’s lifetime achievement. He joins his mentors Dennis Kamakahi and the late Cyril Pahinui, in receiving this award.
This past October 2021, Landeza made Hawaiian music history when he received his second Nā Hōkū Hanohano award (considerd the Hawaiian Grammy) for Best Slack Key Album of the Year. The album “Far Away” is a tribute to his mentor, the late Dennis Kamakhi and mother Frances Kawaipulou Kuakini of Ho`olehua, Moloka`i.
Landeza is in his 27th year in education and currently teaches at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, CA.
