A native Hawaiian, born and raised in California to Hawaiian-born parents, Landeza found her roots in the music her mother shared with her. The songs he taught her, many of which are on her new releases, were songs she learned growing up in Hoolehua, Moloksi. Surrounded by music his entire life, he learned guitar as a teenager by watching his uncles at backyard family gatherings. The music he grew up listening to sparked interest in the traditional art of Slack-Key, linking Patrick to some of Holu’s most famous names: Cyril Pahinui, Raymond Kane, George Koo, and Dennis Kamakahi. Under his tutelage, the network of roots that his mother had carefully established developed and Patrick’s musical style became firmly rooted in slack-key.
“When I learned from Hawaii’s masters, they taught me that being a dull key musician isn’t just about the music,” Landeza explained. “It’s a tradition that uses storytelling as a means of sharing culture.” Attracting audiences in the continental US and Hawaii, Landeza has stayed true to the art form’s traditions, creating themes of its heritage, cultural identity, and self-discovery.
Now as the father of five children, it is Landeza’s turn to follow in the footsteps of his mother and his mentor and share the songs of his legacy with the next generation, linking them to the roots that connect them to their ancestors. . With her two sons this new CD makes a grand statement, as it is a fresh take on old music. As her mother used to say, “When they see little kids playing these old songs, they come back to life, the songs, the people, our culture.” By teaching these young men the songs she taught, Landeza Sr. is making sure that the legacy that was handed down to them by their mother and that preceded them, will live on.
In addition, Landeza has gathered some of her favorite tunes in this new CD offering, a collection that celebrates her commitment to bringing a new generation of musicians to the same traditions they were born into. Landeza said, “Hawaiian music is dynamic, changing and evolving with the world around us. As a veteran musician, composer and producer, Landeza earned the Na Hoki Hanohano Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) – the first musician from the mainland – for his 2013 “Slack’s Huakai”, which won Best of the Year. In 2021 he won his second Na Hoki for his ‘Far Away’ album and in 2019, Landeza won Na Hoki Hanohano’s Hoalu Foundation Legacy Award, an honor that recognizes Hawaiian Slack’s musical legacy at the Hawaii Fair.
